In fiscal 2024, Apple Inc has ramped up its production of iPhones in India, amassing devices worth $14 billion, according to a report by Bloomberg News. This move means that Apple now manufactures approximately 14% of its flagship iPhones in India, equating to about 1 in 7 of these devices. Key players in this manufacturing shift include Foxconn, responsible for around 67% of India-made iPhones, followed by Pegatron Corp at about 17%. The remaining portion was produced at Wistron Corp’s facility in Karnataka, now under the management of the Tata Group.
Apple's strategic shift to increase production in India is part of its broader effort to diversify its supply chain beyond China, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington. Despite this expansion, China continues to serve as the primary global hub for iPhone manufacturing.
Recent reports indicate that Pegatron is in advanced discussions to transfer control of its sole iPhone manufacturing plant near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to the Tata Group. Additionally, the Tata Group is constructing another facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, with Pegatron likely to become its partner in this joint venture.
